When a child receives an autism diagnosis, families are often left navigating an unfamiliar and overwhelming system. Questions about services, funding, education, and next steps can quickly become a source of stress and uncertainty.
For newcomer families, low-income households, and families facing language or systemic barriers, those challenges can be even greater.
That is why SAAAC Autism Centre is committed to keeping our Case Management and Caregiver Skills Training (CST) programs free of charge.
Together, these programs support approximately 250 families each year with guidance, practical skills, advocacy, and connection.

Support Before and After Diagnosis
One of the principles that guides SAAAC’s work is reducing barriers to support.
Families do not need an autism diagnosis to access CST. Caregivers can self-refer directly into the program, allowing them to receive support while they wait for assessments, specialist appointments, funding decisions, or therapeutic services.
For many families, those waiting periods can last months or even years. We believe families should not have to wait for support.
Building Skills Through CST
Caregiver Skills Training (CST) helps parents and caregivers learn practical strategies to support their child’s communication, engagement, learning, and everyday development.
Rather than focusing only on what happens in a clinical setting, CST empowers caregivers to use evidence-informed techniques during everyday routines at home and in the community.

One caregiver shared:
“It is hard to believe this course is free. The content was great and this is probably the first course that I did that focused on taking care of myself as well. The course really helped us with communicating with our child and gave us tips and tricks on how to get him to communicate back with us in a meaningful way.”
For many participants, CST provides more than skills. It helps caregivers build confidence and reminds them that they are not alone in their journey.

Navigating Complex Systems
SAAAC’s Case Management program provides practical, short-term support to help families navigate autism services and move forward with confidence. Many families come to us with a specific question or challenge—such as accessing funding, preparing for a school meeting, or finding the right community resource—and leave with a clear plan and next steps.
Sometimes, however, families are navigating multiple systems and challenges at once.
A Family’s Journey
One family came to SAAAC seeking support for their adult child with autism. What began as a request for transportation support quickly revealed a much broader set of needs, including employment planning, future housing considerations, behavioural support, financial planning, respite services, and mental health resources.
Over the following months, SAAAC’s Case Management team worked alongside the family to connect them with community resources, developmental services, employment supports, financial planning tools, and local service providers. As new challenges emerged, the family received ongoing guidance and advocacy to help them navigate increasingly complex systems.
By the end of their journey, the family had strengthened their support network, connected with appropriate local services, accessed new resources, and developed a clearer plan for the future.
Most importantly, they no longer felt they had to navigate these challenges alone.

Why Free Services Matter
Every family deserves access to guidance and support, regardless of their income or circumstances.
By keeping Case Management and CST free, we help ensure families can access support based on need, not ability to pay. We help caregivers build skills while waiting for services, navigate complex systems with confidence, and connect with a community that understands their experiences.
Because no family should have to navigate the autism journey alone.
