For many autistic and neurodivergent individuals and their families, finding meaningful employment can feel like chasing a dream that keeps slipping out of reach. Traditional jobs aren’t always designed to accommodate diverse communication styles, learning approaches, or sensory needs. And too often, that means untapped potential goes unnoticed.
At the SAAAC Autism Centre, we’ve spent nearly two decades walking alongside autistic individuals and their families—especially those from underserved and newcomer communities. Along the way, we’ve learned that success doesn’t look the same for everyone. That’s why we’re reimagining what opportunity can look like.
Meet SPARKS—a bold new initiative that helps autistic entrepreneurs and their caregivers turn ideas into income and passion into possibility. This program was made possible through the Skills Development Fund provided by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development of Ontario.
The SPARKS Incubator isn’t your typical business program. It’s a community-first initiative designed to give autistic and neurodivergent individuals and their families the tools, training, and mentorship they need to launch or grow their own small businesses. Whether it’s custom crafts, baked goods, creative services, or something entirely new, SPARKS is about putting the power back in people’s hands.
Through SPARKS, 15 aspiring entrepreneurs have received tailored support—everything from product development and marketing, to mentorship and funding.
The result? Five vibrant businesses have either launched or refined their offerings through the program, each one a testament to the creativity, determination, and value that neurodivergent entrepreneurs bring to our communities. Some of the notable businesses to come out the incubator include:
- MG Moms
- Cakes By Thilaka
- JV Sandwhiches
- JS Florals
- Colours By Kevin
For some participants, SPARKS offers a path to financial independence. For others, it’s about building confidence, reclaiming purpose, and showing the world what’s possible when barriers are removed and dreams are supported.
Why does SPARKS matter?
Because employment isn’t one-size-fits-all. Because inclusion means more than just access—it means empowerment. And because every person deserves the opportunity to be seen not just for their challenges, but for their gifts.
At its heart, SPARKS reflects everything SAAAC stands for: innovation, inclusion, and community. It’s a response to real needs, rooted in our belief that culturally responsive, low-barrier programs can transform lives. We know that for families already navigating stigma, language barriers, or financial hardship, traditional pathways often fall short. SPARKS creates a new lane entirely—one where success is defined by creativity, connection, and impact.
The best part? You can be a part of this movement.
Support SPARKS entrepreneurs by shopping their businesses, sharing their stories, or contributing to programs that break down barriers to opportunity. Your support helps build a world where neurodivergent individuals aren’t just included—they’re leading the way.
The future is brighter when we invest in everyone’s potential. With SPARKS, we’re lighting the way.
