Visual Arts – Children’s Foundations Program

Our Children’s Foundations Art Program is designed to be a safe, welcoming, and neuroaffirming space for autistic children ages 6–12 to explore art at their own pace. Rooted in evidence-based strategies and inclusive practices, the program supports creativity, self-expression, and connection - without pressure.

Our program priortizes predictability, autonomy, and joyful participation. Every session is designed to reduce anxiety and sensory overload while supporting communication, social interaction, and creative exploration in ways that feel comfortable and meaningful for each participant.

What to Expect:

  • Safe and Predictable Environment: Small class sizes, consistent routines, and visual supports help create a calm, structured space where kids can thrive.
  • Individualized Support: We honor diverse communication styles and sensory needs, offering tools like visual schedules, calming areas, and communication aids.
  • Creative Expression Without Pressure: Participants are never forced to engage. They can observe, explore materials, or help peers until they feel ready. In safe spaces, participants are more likely to explore new materials, activities, and connections – necessary first steps towards developing long-standing interests and new skills.
  • Skill Development Through Play: Kids explore materials and build foundational art skills – like brush control and color mixing – within a nurturing, low-pressure setting.
  • Interest-Driven Social Interaction: Opportunities for authentic interactions with peers through shared interests and collaborative art activities.

Our Approach:

We use a Pillar Model grounded in child development, autism research, and inclusive design. Our six core pillars include:

  1. Prepared & Predictable – Advanced information and structured routines reduce anxiety.
  2. Supported Visually – Visual aids, schedules, and step-by-step instructions clarify tasks.
  3. Communication-Friendly – Multiple methods to express and receive information.
  4. Sensory-Inclusive – Calming spaces, sensory tools, and breaks are always available.
  5. Autonomy-Respecting – Artists are free to explore at their own pace, with no pressure to perform.

Together, these pillars foster a program environment where curiosity, confidence, and creativity can grow naturally.
