Language Pals

Building stronger communication skills through fun, interactive group learning for children and youth aged 4 to 17.


Language Pals is designed to help children and youth expand their communication abilities by focusing on more complex language skills. Over the course of the program, participants will increase their word usage, learn new vocabulary, and follow multi-step instructions—all in a supportive, group-based environment.

Program Details

  • Duration: 10 sessions – Groups will run everyday for a two week period
  • Date & Time: August 18 – August 29 (9:00 AM-11:30 AM)
  • Ages: Under 10 yrs
  • Location: 1870 Birchmount Rd; Scarborough, ON
  • Language: English

Goals of the Program

  • Increase word use and build vocabulary
  • Use short phrases (3–5 words) to communicate needs and ideas
  • Respond to a variety of WH questions (e.g., who, what, where, when, why)
  • Identify and label objects in books, picture scenes, or the natural environment
  • Request and describe items using adjectives like colour and size
  • Develop foundational skills needed for longer social interactions and conversations

Eligibility

Your child is ready for this program, if they:

  • Are “group ready”: able to remain in the room with peers without behaviours that may pose a safety risk (e.g., high levels of aggression, self-injury, or elopement)
  • Sit and attend to a group activity for at least 5 minutes
  • Use a minimum of 1–2 words to independently request items or actions

What to Expect

Participants will engage in structured group sessions led by experienced facilitators, using visuals, books, and natural play environments to promote learning. Activities will be tailored to individual needs within the group setting to support language development and build confidence in communication.
