This program, led by the compassionate and experienced occupational therapy team at SAAAC Autism Centre, is designed for children aged 6-9. Our goal is to help children improve the fine motor skills essential for handwriting. Each 60-minute session, held once a week, is tailored to nurture and support every child’s growth and confidence.

Goals of the Program
- Improve printing skills, including letter construction, orientation, sizing, placement, and spacing.
- Enhance legibility of handwriting through use of upper- and lower-case letters.
- Develop pre-requisite skills for handwriting such as finger and hand strength, finger isolation, and in-hand manipulation skills.
- Foster the ability to separate the “working” and “supporting” sides of the hand.
Eligibility
- Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
- Aged 6 to 9 years preferred, though applications outside this age range are considered.
- Willingness to hold a writing utensil for brief periods.
- Ability to manage in small group settings (3-5 participants, 2 facilitators).
- Ability to follow simple 1-2 step instructions and a schedule of 3-5 activities.
- Ability to focus for 3-5 minutes.
- Access to a reliable method of communication (e.g., pointing, hand leading).
- Toilet trained or uses pull-ups/diapers.
- Does not engage in harmful behavior to self or others.
- Does not elope; must stay in the room with the door closed.
