At the SAAAC Autism Centre, we know that building strong conversations can be challenging for many children—especially those on the autism spectrum. That’s why we’re offering a free Conversations Mini-Workshop for parents and caregivers who want to better understand how to support their child’s communication skills.
This virtual session will introduce you to the core components of conversational skills, the strengths and challenges autistic children may experience, and how to support your child with confidence, compassion, and the right tools.
What Is Conversation Building?
It’s the ability to start, join, and maintain meaningful interactions with others—while understanding non-verbal cues like body language, tone, and facial expressions. Like any other skill, it can be learned with practice, guidance, and the right tools.
During the workshop, we’ll explore:
- The building blocks of strong conversations
- How to support your child in joining and exiting group discussions
- Strengths and challenges autistic children may experience when developing conversation skills
- Practical games and activities to build confidence and practice conversational components
- How sensory needs can affect conversations—and how to support them
- Strategies from ABA, OT, and SLP that you can use at home to encourage conversation
Why It Matters
Strong communication builds friendships, confidence, and independence. When families understand how conversations work—and how to support them—it creates more connection and less frustration.
This workshop is a welcoming space for parents and caregivers to learn, ask questions, and discover next steps, including our Conversation Crew and DYAD social programs.
