At the heart of the SAAAC Autism Centre is a simple, powerful truth: we are stronger together.
Volunteers have always been the lifeblood of our organization. They show up with open hearts and helping hands—supporting therapy sessions, organizing community events, translating for families, mentoring students, and more. Their time, talent, and care ripple across every corner of SAAAC. Without them, our impact would be far less.
In 2024–2025, over 160 individuals gave 11,307 hours of volunteer service to SAAAC. That’s the equivalent of $194,480 in support if measured by minimum wage. But to us, their contributions are priceless. These are not just hours on a clock—they’re stories of patience, leadership, empathy, and love.
It’s because we’ve always known how extraordinary volunteers are that Geetha Moorthy, our Founder and CEO, along with her family, created the Balasingham Foundation.
Since 2017, the Balasingham Foundation has awarded $24,500 in scholarships to celebrate SAAAC’s most dedicated volunteers—young people who embody leadership, compassion, and a deep commitment to community.
Honouring Legacy, Inspiring the Future
The Balasingham Foundation Scholarship was established in memory of Emelda and Fred Balasingham, parents of Geetha Moorthy.

“My parents were incredible people who believed in community helping community,” shares Geetha. “They were heavily involved in development projects and instilled in us the value of supporting others—especially those in need—as a vital part of life.”
Through this award, the Balasingham family honours the values passed down from one generation to the next: empathy, service, and a belief in building stronger communities. And each year, by recognizing new scholarship recipients, they light the path for future leaders to follow.
A Celebration of Service
This year’s Balasingham Foundation Scholarships will be awarded during National Volunteer Week (April 27 – May 3) at a special volunteer dinner hosted by SAAAC. It will be a night of gratitude and joy, a time to gather and reflect on the incredible impact of our volunteers—and the legacy that continues to guide and inspire us all.
Because at SAAAC, when we speak of community, we’re speaking of people. People like Emelda and Fred Balasingham. People like Geetha. People like the 120 volunteers who have lifted others with their time, spirit, and presence.
To every volunteer who has walked through our doors: thank you. You are not only a part of our story—you are the heart of it.
