You’ve Given the Gift of Employment this Holiday Season!

Finding employment is never easy for individuals with autism. According to Stats Canada, 43.1% of adults with special needs are unemployed. A health report from United States points out that individuals with ASD are 50% more likely to be unemployed than their peers with other special needs.

This holiday season, SAAAC created an initiative to combat unemployment among young adults by providing part-time employment to members of our TEAM (Teaching to Emply Adolescent Minds) program. The initiative incorporates various skills of our students to produce festive gift baskets, which will be sold. Proceeds from purchases will go towards paying the wages of students involved in designing and packaging these wonderful gift baskets. Students will be taught to work in teams, exercise their creative skills, and follow instructions.

Each basket will contain the following items:

– a customized holiday mug and Christmas card (designed by our students)
– a You Auta Know T-shirt
– a holiday candle
– hot chocolate

It’s easy to forget that kids with autism will one day become adults with autism. Without services or employment opportunities, young adults can become inactive and isolated from community life. Initiatives like our holiday gift basket design and packaging give our students opportunities to not only develop relevant work place skills, but also to be engaged in work that gives them a sense of purpose and independence.

Gift baskets are $20. Take part in this great initiative this holiday season, and place a gift basket order at
