The difference between a great outfit and a bland one is the accessories. Does your necklace dazzle? Does your bracelet burst with colour? If it doesn’t, the children and volunteers of SAAAC might have something in store for you. Three months ago, SAAAC launched its “Charms of Hope” project. It was an initiative that allowed children and youth of SAAAC, along with volunteers, to participate in the craft of jewelry making. Initially, the project was slated to last only a week, but since the jewelry pieces got such rave reviews from families and staff it was decided the project’s duration should be extend.

Ranging from exquisite to pure fun, the jewelry pieces attracted a lot of attention, prompting inquiries of whether they were for sale. With such positive feedback, the Charms of Hope jewelry line was created. Customized by the children, youth, and volunteers of SAAAC, the pieces will be, for the time being, sold at SAAAC fundraisers and other special events. Proceeds from the purchase will go directly to help sustain and develop SAAAC services.

The larger goal of the Charms of Hope project is to help participants recognize the value of their creative skills. As the program develops, SAAAC looks to provide employment to adolescents and young adults creating these wonderful jewelry pieces as a means of developing self confidence and learning financial independence.
